Mixed martial arts, sometimes called cage fighting, ultimate fighting, no holds bar, and street fighting, is an intense full-contact sport based on fighting, grappling, and hitting, adding techniques from many different combat sports and martial disciplines from all over the world. No holds bar is a term that is used in many mixed martial arts competitions, which means that the fight can go until one fighter is defeated. Even though no holds bar is frequently seen in the MMA realm, it is still used in other popular martial arts sub-style tournaments. No holds bar is the ultimate challenge in any combat scenario, as it is nearly impossible to escape from when your arms are cinched around your face, your legs are trapped, or you are unable to throw an offensive kick of any kind. In addition to no holds bar, a submission hold is also a common strategy in mixed martial arts. A submission hold is most commonly used against an opponent who is competent in submissions, such as a wrestler or jiu jitsu practitioner.

The person on top will use his or her superior grip strength and leverage to pin down their opponent until submission is achieved. While most people associate the use of hooks and locks with traditional martial arts, these techniques can also be used in the MMA. Other grappling techniques are a combination of locking and non-locking. Most submission attacks in MMA involve joint locks or arm bars. This is because arm bars are highly difficult to apply to an opponent who is competent in submission defense. A variation of the arm bar is the armbar, which is highly effective as a submission attack when executed properly.
There are three phases to the sport: cardio training, strength and stamina building, and cool down. All three are equally important and serve various purposes in the MMA. In traditional martial arts, the cardio training session is extremely important because it tones and firms the muscle and joints to prepare them for more aggressive moves. In the MMA, both strength and stamina building are equally important, but the strength building component is often neglected because it does not simulate an actual combat situation.
