Jiu Jitsu (BJJ ) school are called ‘schools’ or ‘academies’ and not ‘gyms’ because they are in fact more in line with educational institutions and schools than with gymnasiums in the traditional sense.

Jiu Jitsu schools teach discipline, order and respect in an otherwise chaotic combat sports environment. For those uninitiated, Gracie Jiu Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is a martial art based around the premise that technique and leverage can overcome brute strength and aggression. Made famous by the Gracie family specially Helio Gracie who was a frail man who could not even do a pull up all through his life. He however understood the concept of technique and leverage and used that to fight a number of fighters from several martial arts and was able to prove the effectiveness of Jiu Jitsu whenever the fight went to the ground.

Another example of the Gracie family was the very first UFC event where the smallest fighter in an otherwise open weight tournament Royce Gracie, was able to strangle all of his opponents ; all of whom were from different martial arts and all of whom were physically much bigger and stronger than Royce.

Today Jiu Jitsu has evolved into 2 seperate forms- Gi (with the Kimono uniform) and Nogi (without the Kimono). In India Jiu Jitsu started in 2012 when Crosstrain Fight Club brought authentic Jiu Jitsu training in Delhi via head coach Siddharth singh who is currently India’s only competitive Brown Belt, and BJJ World Masters Silver Medalist.

Via Crosstrain Fight Club, Jiu Jitsu training is split into Gi, Nogi as well as BJJ for MMA. In MMA (mixed martial arts) the application of Jiu Jitsu is vital as can be seen at the UFC where most fighters are either Brown Belt or Black Belt. In India where fake martial arts is so prevalent, Crosstrain had proven its legitimacy by winning the prestigious ADCC team trophy 2 times (2019, 2020) as well as the Asian Team Trophy at the Dumao championship held in New Delhi. Even in MMA, fighters from Crosstrain have dominated promotions like Matrix fight night with the likes of Anshul Jubli and Punyajit Likharu.

At a Jiu Jitsu School like Crosstrain Fight Club, every student is taught the core principles of Jiu Jitsu that make kids bully proof and women- empowered via self defence. In a country like India, and city like Delhi where rape and kidnapping are so rampant, Jiu Jitsu is in essence the need of the hour for women and children.

Story of 14 year old Krish GuptaHi everyone! I am Krish Gupta and I am 14 years old! I have been a part of the Crosstrain family for almost 4 years now. I joined Crosstrain Fight Club back in 2016. I used to go to the cricket academy before joining Crosstrain, I was literally very very bored of it so thought lets do something different.

So I told my father that I wanted to leave the cricket academy and do something in combat sports and he was the happiest person to hear that. He thought that it will be very beneficial for me as I would not only get fit and disciplined but will also be able to protect myself and feel secure if alone at shady places.

He found Crosstrain Fight Club via Google, we went there the next week, met their executive and I was a part of Crosstrain after that day.

Firstly my mother was quite reluctant about joining but my father pushed me.

I had my trial class on a SUNDAY! Sundays are basically the days when one of the fitness coaches – Deepak sir take the class. In this class it is all about cross training, fitness, exercising and all.

I attended the trial class and I was dead. I was so tired that the next morning my whole body was aching so much that it became difficult for me to go to school. The next few days were also very exhausting but after a week or so I became used to that “grind”.

In crosstrain, majorly 5 combat sports are in the spot light – Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling and Kickboxing. The martial art which I personally love the most is Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu is a gentle art in which a weaker or a smaller person can take over a stronger opponent by using techniques rather than strength.

It is not like that I didn’t practice the striking classes which are the ones that include Muay thai, boxing and kickboxing. It was just that I loved doing Jiu Jitsu. My coaches – Siddharth sir, Rajiv sir and Tarun bhaiya whom we lovingly call Beasty bhaiya taught me numerous techniques from all basics to the advanced ones.

They all have participated and won so many medals and trophies and it is such an inspiring place to be among such people who always motivate you to do better and appreciate on tiniest achievements. Their dedication towards teaching the finest of techniques is remarkable! If they need to bring perfection in your technique they will repeat the explanation as well as the practical demonstration tirelessly and patience is their key character.

All the coaches and the training partners in crosstrain are so welcoming, friendly and easy to train with, they will help you wherever you get stuck.

They make us practice so much that the self-defense techniques become a part of our muscle memory which is very important for everyone to have. If anyone grabs your hand, neck, hair or whatever then the techniques the coaches at crosstrain teach do work. These are the techniques which are applicable in the real incidents and are very useful.

A number of seminars are held on various things like Kids Bully Proof, Womens Self-Defense, etc. in which numerous guest coaches are invited who with utmost sincerity and dedication help everyone to master the fundamentals of the self-defense techniques.

Although I am the youngest there, I have been treated like one of their ages only whether it be going out for events, celebrations which include numerous lunches and dinners, watching each other fights and taking opinions about the various fights. The whole crosstrain group takes care of everyone present in a class.

Also the key quality that one should have i.e. team work is seen at this place. If its one fighter’s fight be it at district level, zonal level, national or international, the whole gym helps that one person to excel so that he can give a tough fight to his opponent and hopefully win the fight. If one fighter from crosstrain wins a medal or a trophy then it’s the whole gym’s achievement.

Our team takes part in so many competitions. We recently took part in the ADCC 2020 nationals where Crosstrain Fight Club achieved the first position. Last year in June we became the Number 1 Team in South Asia which is a very very big achievement.

It’s been a heartwarming journey at crosstrain since I have developed very close bond with all the people there who have trained with me.

The people whom you make friends at crosstrain are the friends for life. I got a lot of partners with whom I train but one of my favourite training partners is Anwesha di. She is the person who helps me if I am having a problem in anything whether it is a problem in a particular technique or a problem in school or whatever it is, she will help me out.

We both have a lot of fun together and she is also a talented grappler and won 2 gold medals in the ADCC competition. I also love training with Beasty bhaiya, Shivansh bhaiya, Anshul bhaiya and a lot of other people as they are always so welcoming and friendly to train with.
Crosstrain is not only a gym for me its rather greater than a family.

Due to COVID-19 I am not being able to go and practice and meet all of my training partners and coaches so I am eagerly waiting for things to sort out and start soon.

Lastly I would just like to say that joining Crosstrain was one of the best decisions I have ever taken as those 3-4 hours when I am with the Crosstrain people is the time when I am the happiest and enjoy myself to the fullest. 🙂

His fighting techniques and the vision to promote mixed martial arts led him to participate in ADCC Championship, which he won in Taiwan and Britain.
